TANDEM Cultural Program: Medieval Madrid

June 21, 2018 @ 6:00 pm CEST

medieval Madrid

Madrid, despite the strong post-Renaissance appearance it has today, mixed with modern elements, also had a discreet medieval past. The city has been inhabited since prehistoric times. With the arrival of the Romans, the region had a relative importance as they established routes throughout the Iberian peninsula. Only in the sixteenth century, with the arrival of the courts, the city reached the splendor we know today. But meanwhile, it was occupied by the Moors and later reconquered by the Christians in the eleventh century. Since then, the remains of the Muslim presence were being absorbed by new construction features of the centuries that followed, but it survived among small corners that tell a little story about what led us to where we are.

In this walk through the “Medieval Madrid“, we will know some of these almost secret corners, which often escape the gaze of thousands of visitors who pass through here every year. We’ll learn a little more about the influences of different cultures in the character of the city and discover relics as the remains of the wall and the Arab citadel or marks of Moorish culture in Christian buildings like the church of St. Nicholas.

Meeting point: Plaza de Oriente, at 6:00 pm, at the horse statue with Sonia
