The neighborhoods of Madrid represent the essence of life in this vibrant city. Some of them, such as Lavapiés, are more than 500 hundred years old and since their origin, many different cultures and nationalities have lived here together. Others, such as Malasaña or La Latina are full of bars and terraces where you can have “cañas” (beer) and tapas any day and time of the week, and also nightclubs and pubs where you can dance till the sun comes up.

In Madrid, you will find a cheerful, special and unique street life where everyone is welcome. You can’t find many cities in the world that stay alive 24 hours a day year-round, or that change dramatically just by turning a corner.

Simply by crossing the Paseo de Recoletos, you go from the luxurious neighborhood of Salamanca, an ideal shopping destination where you will find the best and most prestigious fashion brands in the world, to the the streets of Chueca. This is one of the most representative neighborhoods of the LGBT movement, and an example of diversity where LGBT Pride festivities are celebrated every summer.

Other neighborhoods are filled with tradition and history, such as the neighborhoods of the Austrias and the Letras, where time seems to have completely stopped. There you will find the Opera Square, the Royal Theatre of Madrid, the Plaza de Oriente, the Royal Palace, the Gardens of Sabatini and the Almudena Cathedral. Everyone who visits Madrid needs to see these places which say a lot about the people who lived and reigned in the past.

You will also be able to keep track of the greatest writers of the Spanish Golden Age such Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Luis de Góngora or Francisco de Quevedo, and of more modern writers such as Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and José Echegaray.

Madrid is a city with such infinite possibilities; still, there are many people from Madrid who still don’t know the city in depth. The ‘Spanish and a Passion for Madrid and its Neighborhoods Course’ makes it easier for you to discover the personality of many Madrid neighborhoods and their major tourist and historic highlights while learning Spanish.

You can join this program any Monday of the year. However, if you don’t have previous knowledge of Spanish, you can join the course the first and third Monday of each month. The program is designed for foreigners over the age of 18, with a desire to learn or improve their Spanish.

With this course you will be able to learn Spanish while discovering the history and culture of Madrid. The course consists of 20 lessons per week, 4 45-minute Spanish lessons each morning, and cultural activities in the afternoon such as visiting the neighborhood of Chueca, the neighborhood of Salamanca, the Madrid of the Austrias and the Borbones and other interesting locales.
